Stars to Burst

With minutes left to 8pm, the heavens broiled as the first calls for Kent Ridgeans to gather at the MPSH sounded. The performers' eyes flit skyward at the rainclouds hanging over Kent Ridge Hall, barely a pause as they hurried to their holding rooms, scripts and lyrics flapping in their hands. Stars to Burst was about to begin.

The hosts: Viknesh and Khadijah

Our lovely Acapellets

It exploded open with a cheer as hosts Vicknesh and Khadijah stormed out the curtains to get the show started and introduce the first act of the concert: the Acapellets. With little more than their voices constructing a lattice of song, the band of six eased the hall into the night with their first number The Longest Time by Billy Joel, but the real thrills came when they sang Kokomo by the Beach Boys, freshman Yuting charming the hall with her clear, beautiful vocals promising coconut trees and sandy paradise.

A scene from "21 Days"

Paradise took a turn into black comedy as the drama royale of KRY showcased 21 Days, the story of Dave (played by Billy) who discovers the meaninglessness of his life in his last three weeks of life. While the play unintentionally scored laughs when a lighting mistake during an adulterous tryst between Dave's wife and her lover left actor Hafiz clinging onto Amelia a naughty bit too long, it was Xing Ji who stole the show as Dave's flustered superior flapping at the horror of losing his stepping stone to career success.

The groovers from "I Went To Church Yesterday"

Even as KRY took a bow, the sky opened up in pouring rain, but the freshmen were determined to match nature's fury outside with their energy inside as they brought out the first Dance item. Taking their cue from this year's FWOC theme, Playback the KRonology, the dance team Playback chose to take the audience on a journey through the different eras of popular dance and didn't disappoint as they seared the dance floor with the disco beats of Dolly Parton's Baby I'm Burnin', the MTV teenybopper pop of *NSYNC's Pop, and finally the hiphop grooves of B2K's Take It to the Floor.

Our fresh musical talents from Perspire

With the last B2K beat, the audience settled back into their seats as Vicknesh achieved new lows in the history of compering with each attempt at lame wordplay with the name of the next performing group – Perspire, the little siblings of Kent Ridge Hall's Inspire songwriting group. It was a night of glittering stars and romance as vocalist Britney spun a weave of l'amour with the song Be Your Angel, written by guitarist Yiting and accompanied by keyboardist Xiu Qi. Hafiz, freshly recovered from his moment in the spotlight, then joined the band to perform their second song, Try, an updated version of the song Hafiz sang for his date during FWOC's Dating Game.

And then it was back to Dance as the Vicknese and Khadijah brought on the next dance team I Went to Church Yesterday, the name a play on the two songs they were dancing to – Yesterday by Leona Lewis and Church by T-Pain. The team wowed the crowd with their moves, but it was dancer Zhi Wen who seized the show with the magic of his lyrical hiphop poetry-in-motion and explosive energy.

The choir group Quiet then came on to sing Michael Bolton's Go the Distance, giving an admirable performance, especially from the girls, despite moments when the choir's talented voices stepped slightly out of harmony with the song. Yet their effort was clear for all to see. The hall rewarded them with rousing applause for a job well done.

From left: Master Kuldip Singh, Joel T and Lishi Lee

As it neared its final act, Stars to Burst took a short breather to welcome Culture Director Lee Lishi as she announced Kent Ridge Hall A Cappella's excellent showing at the National A Cappella Championship 2008 and presented to Hall Master Kuldip Singh the three awards they had charmed out of the judges as the acafellas – the Best Dressed Award, the Audience Favourite Award, and the 1st-Runner Up Award in the National A Cappella Championship Open Category. The hall opened in applause for Kent Ridge Hall A Cappella and the acafellas – Tina, Lishi, Jia Xin, Joel T, Vernon, Elvin, Glen, and Allen.

On that note, Vicknesh and Khadijah got everyone on their feet and up to the stage as Stars to Burst entered its finale, the Pebbles emerging to close the show with a cacophony of rock music. With Amanda on vocals, Kelvin on keyboard and supporting vocals, Darell on bass, Marcus on drums, and Xiao Long on guitar, the band opened with Stand by Me by Oasis, but it was in their next song I Don't Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith that vocalist Amanda really shone, with excellent contribution from Kelvin. Their third and final song, Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, closed the show, bringing out the maestros of the backstage – the invisible Stage Crew – without whom the entire concert would have fallen flat, and marked the end of Stars to Burst and the beginning of Kent Ridge Hall's proud and ancient traditional ritual of block photo-whoring.

And so Stars to Burst was over, shedding the last vestiges of FWOC as Kent Ridge Hall begins a new chapter of Inter-Block Games in the hall calendar. Some gems stood out tonight, but the acts were rarely perfect, the rough edges of freshmen with little more than a passion for their art and rarely any experience throwing out a performance in three weeks showing at times. Dance steps were forgotten. Voices were off key. Jokes were missed. But who cares? It was a grand effort by the freshmen indeed to try to live up to the standards set by the seniors during the KR Records, and tonight everyone was a star.

NUS Rag & Flag ’08: We’ve Got Our Shield Back!!

The awards!

After a year long wait for a chance to repeat the Kronos feat, Kent Ridge Hall shocks all by winning 9 out of the 11 awards available for Halls and Residences Category at Rag and Flag Day, including the most prized and prestigious Chancellors’ Shield.

Bad weather had gotten everyone jittery for Rag Day. Firstly, the Rag preview was delayed. And it did not help that the float could not be shown during the preview later on, much to the disappointment of the alumni who came back specially for it. Secondly, it rained so badly the night before Rag Day that the timing of the parade had to be postponed by 2 hours. Lastly, dark clouds were looming ominously when Rag Day started. It was certainly not the best of starts for Rag Day, but fortunately, people’s prayers were answered and Kent Ridge Hall managed to present the float in all its perfection and glory under the shining bright sunlight. Most important of all, the float had exceeded all expectations and won most of the awards that were given out on Rag and Flag Day.

ShoeHouse

The float itself is a shoe house, representing the journey that the previous Kent Ridge Hall Rag teams had undergone, and keeping with the theme of Rag and Flag Day. It was a masterpiece with intricate cladding and amazing statics. Interestingly, Eusoff Hall had an almost similar design, but the Kent Ridge float won hands down with the sheer amount of detail that was put into the float by the Rag team.

But such glory and joy did not come without much hard work and cooperation among all Kent Ridgeans. Prizing ourselves as a family hall, support was given unanimously to the Rag Team. The most evident of this was the congregation that marched all the way from Hall to the Sports and Recreational Centre (SRC) in their distinctive blue FWOC t-shirts, yelling out coordinated cheers and attracting more than just a few stares along the way. Under normal circumstances such behaviour would seem a little odd, but the spirit shown in that short road march gave Kent Ridgeans a real moral boost and gave the other faculties and halls a run for their money for Rag and Flag Day. Surely the confidence that exuded from the mere bright blue t-shirts had given us a leg up in the competition.

SpecialAppearance

But attracting envious stares from school is not the only way we had shown our support to the amazing Rag team. The presentation itself was a coordinated effort, a brainchild of dance choreographer Krissandi and Melissa Chan. Interestingly, many were left wondering why we had to cheer at certain parts of a song, even though it really seemed random. It turns out that the Hall Master Kuldip Singh threw a little surprise by popping out of the float with the JCRC president Mohammad Rizal at those random parts. The participation of Master Kuldip Singh was definitely the highlight of the float presentation and it probably shocked the judges and those around who knew him. Mostly, it showed that the float this year was really a combined effort of all Kent Ridgeans.

Of course, special mention has to be given to the Rag helpers, who had endured the cold chilly weather in the SRC for the night before, in order to keep the float safe and the practice smooth for the presentation.
Kent Ridge Hall had won all awards except the prize for the least cost float and the most original theme float for both Rag and Flag, earning us the most important award of all, the Chancellor’s Shield. Flag was the most impressive of all, sweeping everything including both best progress award in terms of percentage and absolute amount. Earning a total of almost over $136,000, it is a huge improvement from the already huge amount of $100,000 raised last year. Moreover, it constituted almost two-fifths of the $500,000 plus raised by the whole of NUS itself. This was done so despite many setbacks and bumps that the Hall occurred during Flag.

What was impressive was that Kent Ridgeans had sweated out and cheered out with all their hearts for the Hall. Kent Ridge Hall was so hyped up that even Biz-Ad was going “K, K, K, K, R…” along with the hall.

KR no.1… Indeed, Kent Ridge Hall dominated on Rag and Flag Day. Chingay, here we come!
